The Industrial Revolution

The Industrial Revolution, which began in Britain in the late 18th century, marked a major turning point in history. Almost every aspect of daily life was influenced in some way by this transformation from agrarian and handicraft economies to ones dominated by industry and machine manufacturing.

The revolution began with the mechanization of the textile industries and the development of iron-making techniques. The introduction of steam power, primarily fueled by coal, wider utilization of water wheels, and powered machinery underpinned the dramatic increases in production capacity.

The effects spread throughout Western Europe and North America during the 19th century, eventually affecting most of the world. The impact of this change on society was enormous and is often compared to the Neolithic Revolution, when humankind developed agriculture and gave up its nomadic lifestyle.
